The Holy Stairs

The first Holy Stairs were built in 1757, imitating the Scala Santa in Rome. They were completely destroyed during World War I. In 1931 the architect Ivan Vurnik designed new stairs, but they were damaged during World War II. They were restored in 1954. A relic is embedded in the centre of each of the twenty-eight steps. At the top of the stairs there is the Holy Sepulchre with a statue of Jesus, an altar table and a fresco of the mockery of Jesus painted by Tone Kralj in 1966. The parish priest Janez Elersič, who built the previous church, is buried by the chapel of the Holy Stairs.
